- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on a Shiba Inu
The Shiba Inu has a compact, muscular build with a thick double coat and a neck that is often wider than the head. This breed is known for being agile and can be prone to backing out of loose-fitting gear.

How to measure a Shiba Inu
Measure around the widest part of the ribs, snug against the plush coat without compressing it to the skin. Check the measurement twice, and re-check the fit after the coat blows, so the harness stays snug enough to prevent slipping out.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
