FURPICK

Dog gear has no shoe size. So we made one.

Every brand publishes its own chart and stops there, so “my dog is a Medium” means nothing the moment you switch. One chest measurement becomes your dog’s FurPick number — the size that translates across every brand, for life.

Already own one of these? Charts say how a harness is meant to fit. Owners know how it actually did. Tell us, and this page starts answering that too.

Before you order — the two-finger rule

  1. Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
  2. Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
  3. Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Ranges are transcribed from each manufacturer’s own chart. See the full conversion chart or how we check these numbers.

How the number works

Step 1

Measure once

The deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. That single number is what every brand sizes by.

Step 2

Get your number

Your dog’s girth in centimetres, which is the only figure that means the same thing at every manufacturer.

Step 3

Read it anywhere

Julius-K9, Ruffwear, PetSafe, Kurgo and Blue-9 — 43 sizes, all transcribed from their own charts.

The conversion nobody else publishes

A Julius-K9 “1” is a Ruffwear “M”. Every brand’s sizes, lined up against each other on one scale, so you can see exactly where they disagree — including the sizes with no clean equivalent anywhere else.

Your dog fits one brand and not the next

Sizing a deep-chested dog

Chest girth, not weight, is the defining measurement when fitting a harness to deep-chested breeds like Greyhounds, Dobermans, and Dachshunds.

11 September 2026 · 5 min

A harness that does not fit is a harness a dog can back out of. If your measurement lands on the edge of a range, take the size that leaves adjustment in hand rather than the one that only just closes. Julius-K9 · Ruffwear · PetSafe · Kurgo · Blue-9 · Rabbitgoo · Puppia
