- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on a Shetland Sheepdog
This breed has a light, athletic frame hidden under an extremely thick, long double coat. The chest is deep but narrow, and the neck is relatively slender.
Look for a lightweight harness that will not weigh down the small frame or cause the long coat to tangle. A design with smooth linings helps prevent the fur from snagging in buckles or adjusters.

How to measure a Shetland Sheepdog
Place the tape around the deepest part of the chest, allowing the fur to remain lofted to ensure the harness does not fit too tightly.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
