- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on a Newfoundland
The Newfoundland has a massive, broad chest and a thick, water-resistant double coat that adds significant bulk. This breed is heavily muscled with a wide ribcage and a neck that is often as thick as the head.
A Y-shaped harness with wide, adjustable straps is necessary to accommodate the broad chest without restricting shoulder movement. Choose a design with multiple adjustment points to ensure the straps can be fitted correctly over the dense coat.

How to measure a Newfoundland
Measure the chest at its widest point, snug against the thick coat as it lies rather than pulled through to the skin. For a growing puppy, re-measure often, as the ribcage broadens quickly.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
