- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on a Great Dane
This giant breed has a massive, deep chest and a very large overall frame. Because of their sheer size and strength, the harness must be able to withstand significant force while fitting a chest that exceeds standard dimensions.
Choose a harness with wide, reinforced straps to distribute weight across the large surface area of the chest. Ensure the design does not sit too high, as pressure on the throat must be avoided in such a large animal.

How to measure a Great Dane
Use a long measuring tape to circle the widest part of the ribcage. Since this breed often sits at the limit of available sizes, double-check the measurement to ensure the straps will have enough room for adjustment.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
