Before you order — the two-finger rule · full measuring guide
- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.
Ranges are transcribed from each manufacturer’s own chart. See the full conversion chart or how we check these numbers.
Fitting a harness on a Collie (Rough)
The Rough Collie has a deep but fairly narrow chest hidden under a very dense, double coat. The frame is moderate and athletic, but the massive volume of fur can make the dog appear much larger than it actually is. The head is wedge-shaped and narrow, which can allow some dogs to slip out of standard collars.
An escape-resistant harness with a second belly strap can be beneficial due to the narrow head and thick neck hair. Smooth, rounded straps or silk-lined padding will help prevent the heavy coat from matting under the harness.
Measured a fully grown Collie (Rough)? Enter the chest in the tool above and set “Fully grown”. At 20 dogs this page shows a range from owners’ actual tape readings.

How to measure a Collie (Rough)
Measure at the deepest point of the ribcage with the tape flat and snug against the coat — firm enough to settle into the outer coat, not pulled through to the skin. Then check the fit by feeling for the girth strap through the coat once the harness is on.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it. That single number, the chest girth, is what every brand on this page sizes by. Weight is only ever a tie-breaker. The full measuring guide covers the mistakes that send harnesses back.
