What size harness does a Doberman Pinscher need?

The breed standard puts a Doberman Pinscher at 27–45kg (60–99lb). Published weight guidance gives a shortlist at 6 of 12 charts. Chest girth is still needed at every chart.

Optional. Each fully grown dog of a named breed adds to that breed’s measured chest range, published on its breed page once twenty are in.

Before you order — the two-finger rule · full measuring guide

  1. Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
  2. Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
  3. Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Ranges are transcribed from each manufacturer’s own chart. See the full conversion chart or how we check these numbers.

Fitting a harness on a Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher has an exceptionally deep and narrow ribcage that creates a sharp angle toward the waist. The skin is thin and the coat is very short, making the dog prone to rubbing and irritation from stiff materials.

An escape-resistant harness with a second belly strap can be useful for this breed's deep-chested, narrow-waisted silhouette. Padded Y-shaped fronts are ideal to protect the skin and allow for unrestricted movement.

How to measure a Doberman Pinscher

CHEST GIRTHdeepest part of the ribcagejust behind the front legsNOT THE NECK
Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it. Measure with your dog standing. Let the dog settle, then check the reading again.

Place the tape at the deepest point of the chest, which is typically further back than on other breeds. Ensure the measurement is taken while the dog is standing squarely to capture the full depth of the ribcage.

Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it. That single number, the chest girth, is what every brand on this page sizes by. Weight is only ever a tie-breaker. The full measuring guide covers the mistakes that send harnesses back.
