- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on an Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd has a solid, well-proportioned build with a moderately deep chest and a thick double coat. The neck and chest area can vary significantly between individuals, especially between working and show lines.
A harness with multiple adjustment points is necessary to fit through the dense fur without being too loose on the frame. A Y-front design helps manage the dog's agility without restricting the shoulders.

How to measure an Australian Shepherd
Measure at the widest part of the ribs, just behind the elbows, with the tape snug against the coat as it lies — firm enough not to float on the fluff, but not pulled through to the skin. Re-check the fit after the coat blows or after a groom.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
