Before you order — the two-finger rule · full measuring guide

  1. Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
  2. Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
  3. Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Ranges are transcribed from each manufacturer’s own chart. See the full conversion chart or how we check these numbers.

Fitting a harness on a Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois is a high-energy, muscular dog with a deep chest and a powerful, athletic frame. The build is generally square and lean, with a neck that is well-muscled and tapers into the shoulders. There is a notable size difference between males and females, though both maintain a streamlined silhouette.

A durable, multi-point harness is recommended to handle the strength and speed of this breed. A Y-shaped front is preferred to allow for the high-intensity movement and jumping typical of the breed.

How to measure a Belgian Malinois

CHEST GIRTHdeepest part of the ribcagejust behind the front legsNOT THE NECK
Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it. Measure with your dog standing. Let the dog settle, then check the reading again.

Measure the chest at its deepest point while the dog is standing squarely. For younger dogs, leave a little room for muscular development in the chest and shoulders as they reach full maturity.

Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it. That single number, the chest girth, is what every brand on this page sizes by. Weight is only ever a tie-breaker. The full measuring guide covers the mistakes that send harnesses back.
