- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on a Vizsla
The Vizsla has a very deep, narrow chest and a significant tuck-up at the waist. The skin is thin and the coat is short and fine, providing very little natural padding against friction. This breed is lean and muscular, with a build that often makes the girth measurement seem large for the dog's weight.
Padded straps are essential for this short-coated breed to prevent sores on the chest and armpits. A harness with an adjustable belly strap is necessary to accommodate the steep angle from the deep chest to the narrow waist.

How to measure a Vizsla
Measure at the deepest part of the chest, which is located directly behind the elbows. Ensure the tape is snug against the short fur to get an accurate reading of the ribcage.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
