- Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
- Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
- Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Fitting a harness on a Cocker Spaniel
The Cocker Spaniel has a deep, well-sprung ribcage and a thick, silky coat that can hide the true body shape. The neck is muscular and flows into sloping shoulders that require full range of motion. Adult builds are generally consistent, though coat volume varies between show and working lines.
A Y-shaped harness is recommended to prevent restriction of the shoulders during exercise. Choose a design with smooth linings to prevent the long coat from matting or tangling under the straps.

How to measure a Cocker Spaniel
Measure the chest at its deepest point, snug against the coat as it lies rather than pulled through it. For dogs with heavy feathering, check that the strap sits behind the armpits to avoid chafing.
Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it.
