What size harness does a Chihuahua need?

The breed standard puts a Chihuahua at 1.5–2.7kg (3–6lb). Published weight guidance gives a shortlist at 3 of 12 charts, including 2 with only one candidate. Chest girth is still needed at every chart.

Optional. Each fully grown dog of a named breed adds to that breed’s measured chest range, published on its breed page once twenty are in.

Before you order — the two-finger rule · full measuring guide

  1. Measure the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the dog standing.
  2. Two fingers should slide flat under any strap. A whole hand means it is loose enough to reverse out of.
  3. Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it — and re-check after a groom.

Ranges are transcribed from each manufacturer’s own chart. See the full conversion chart or how we check these numbers.

Fitting a harness on a Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a tiny breed with a dainty bone structure and a slightly rounded ribcage. The neck is very slender and the throat is delicate, making it sensitive to pressure. Even small variations in weight can significantly change how a harness fits on such a small frame.

Lightweight materials are necessary to avoid weighing down the dog or causing discomfort. A step-in harness or a soft vest is often safer than a heavy over-the-head model to protect the fragile neck and trachea.

Measured a fully grown Chihuahua? Enter the chest in the tool above and set “Fully grown”. At 20 dogs this page shows a range from owners’ actual tape readings.

The weight shortlist matches Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian and Maltese. The same weight candidates can cover dogs with different chest measurements. Use your own tape reading to choose from the charts.

How to measure a Chihuahua

CHEST GIRTHdeepest part of the ribcagejust behind the front legsNOT THE NECK
Snug against the coat, not pulled tight through it. Measure with your dog standing. Let the dog settle, then check the reading again.

Use a flexible measuring tape to find the girth just behind the front legs. Ensure the tape is level around the body and not too tight, as the ribcage on toy breeds is quite delicate.

Take a soft tape right around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug against the coat rather than pulled tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under it. That single number, the chest girth, is what every brand on this page sizes by. Weight is only ever a tie-breaker. The full measuring guide covers the mistakes that send harnesses back.
