Harness or collar for a dog that pulls?

The honest answer is that neither stops pulling, and choosing between them is a question about where the force goes rather than which one trains better.
This gets argued about as though it were a training question. It mostly is not. A collar and a harness both attach a dog to a lead, and neither of them teaches a dog anything on its own. What they genuinely differ on is where the force ends up when the dog pulls, and that is a physical question with a clear answer.
Where the force goes
On a flat collar, everything concentrates on the front of the neck — over the trachea, the thyroid, and the jugular. A dog that leans into a collar is loading a narrow band across some of the least robust anatomy it owns.
On a harness, the same force spreads across the chest and ribcage, which is structural. That is the entire mechanical argument, and it is a strong one.
This is why harnesses are near-universal for brachycephalic breeds — Pugs, French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Boxers — whose airways are already compromised. It is also why they are the default for small dogs with delicate tracheas: Yorkshires, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles.
If your dog pulls hard and consistently, the harness is the better answer for the dog's body. That much is not really contested.
What a harness does not do
Here is where the marketing runs ahead of reality: a harness does not reduce pulling, and a back-clip harness can make it slightly worse.
A back-clip harness attaches behind the shoulders. Pull on it and the dog feels resistance pushing back against its chest, and dogs respond to steady chest pressure by leaning into it. It is the same reflex that makes sled dogs effective, and a sled harness is a back-clip harness by design.
So the honest position is: a back-clip harness protects the neck and does nothing whatsoever about the pulling. Both halves of that are true at once.
Front-clip, and what it actually does
A front-clip harness attaches at the chest. When the dog pulls, the lead turns it back towards you instead of letting it drive forwards.
That is a steering effect, not a training effect. It makes a strong dog physically manageable on a walk today. It does not teach loose-lead walking, and if you take it off the dog pulls exactly as it did before.
Used well, that is enough: it makes walks survivable while the actual training happens, and it stops the walk itself rehearsing the pulling.
Used badly — clipped on and nothing else changing — you have a dog that pulls in a different direction for a year.
The case for keeping a collar anyway
Even if you walk on a harness, the collar stays on, because in most of the UK and much of the US it is a legal requirement for a dog in a public place to wear a collar with an identification tag. The harness comes off at home. The ID does not.
Practical arrangement most people land on: collar with ID worn permanently, lead clipped to the harness.
What to actually do
- Harness, for any dog that pulls hard enough to cough or gag on a collar. That symptom is not a matter of opinion.
- Front-clip if you need control now, back-clip if the dog already walks reasonably and you just want the neck protected.
- Do not expect either to fix the pulling. The gear buys you a manageable walk; the training does the rest.
- Get the fit right, because a harness that a dog can reverse out of is worse than a collar. That failure happens at the girth strap, and it is a fit problem with three specific checks.
Fit is the part that decides whether any of this works
All of the above assumes the harness stays where it is meant to. A loose one rides forward onto the shoulders under load, which puts you back to concentrating force in the wrong place and gives the dog an escape route.
Harness sizes are not comparable between brands — the same dog is a Julius-K9 "1" and a Ruffwear "M" — so knowing you bought a Medium last time tells you very little about what to buy next time. Measure the chest once and the tool gives the right size at every brand, and shows where in each range your dog sits.
