Do no-pull harnesses actually work?

They work, but not in the way the name implies, and the difference matters if you are hoping to stop buying gear. What the mechanism really is, and when it is the wrong tool.
"No-pull" is a category name, not a claim that survives reading closely. Nothing you clip onto a dog removes its motivation to get to the lamppost faster than you are walking. What these harnesses do is change what happens when it tries — and that is genuinely useful, as long as you know which one you are buying.
The two mechanisms sold under one name
Front-clip (redirection). The lead attaches at the chest. Pull, and the attachment point turns the dog's shoulders back towards the handler. The dog is not made uncomfortable; it is made to point the wrong way, and forward progress stops.
This is steering. It works immediately, it works on strong dogs, and it stops working the moment you take it off — because nothing was learned, only prevented.
Tightening designs (aversive). Some harnesses marketed as no-pull constrict when the dog pulls, usually across the chest or under the front legs. The dog stops pulling because pulling becomes unpleasant.
These often work faster than front-clips, and they are a different proposition ethically and practically. A design that tightens under the armpits can chafe or restrict the shoulder over long walks, and a dog that finds walking uncomfortable can start finding walks aversive rather than pulling.
If you are buying, know which of the two you have picked. The packaging frequently does not make it obvious.
What "works" should mean
The realistic bar is: the walk is manageable today, and the pulling is not being rehearsed.
That second half is the part people miss. Every walk where a dog pulls and then arrives somewhere interesting is a walk that taught it pulling works. A front-clip harness breaks that loop — the dog pulls, it turns sideways, it does not get there. Over weeks, that alone reduces pulling, not because the harness trained anything but because it stopped the environment training the wrong thing.
What it will not do is produce a dog that walks nicely on a flat collar. If that is your goal, the harness is a tool used during training, not instead of it.
Where front-clips genuinely fall down
- Shoulder interference. Cheaper front-clips run a strap straight across the front of the shoulders, which restricts the reach of the front legs. Look for a Y-shaped chest piece that sits on the breastbone and leaves the shoulder free. This matters more the more the dog walks.
- Lead tangling. A front-clip lead runs down between the front legs and gets stepped over constantly, which is the main reason people quietly give up on them.
- Small dogs. On a 4kg dog the redirection effect is unnecessary — you can already outmuscle the dog — and the hardware is often disproportionately heavy.
- Serious lungers. A dog that hits the end of the lead at speed and sideways is being torqued through one shoulder. For genuinely reactive dogs, a front-clip is not the whole answer and a behaviourist is.
The dual-clip compromise
Most of the better harnesses now have both attachment points. That is worth paying for: front-clip for busy pavements and training walks, back-clip for open ground and long-line work where redirection is pointless and tangling is guaranteed.
It also means one harness lasts across the training arc rather than being replaced when the dog improves.
The thing that decides whether any of it works
Fit, again, and specifically at the chest strap.
A front-clip harness that sits too loose rotates around the dog. The chest ring drifts off the centreline, the redirection stops being symmetric, and the dog learns it can lean through it on one side. At that point you have the tangling and none of the benefit.
Sizes are not transferable between brands — the same dog is a Julius-K9 "1" and a Ruffwear "M" — so the size that fitted the last one tells you very little about the next. Measure the chest once and get the right size at every brand at the same time, including where in each range your dog falls, which is what determines whether there is adjustment left when the coat thickens.
And if the harness you have keeps riding forward, that is a fit failure with three specific checks, not a design flaw.
